Victorian Krampus in his Krampmobile Christmas Card
Victorian Krampus in his Krampmobile Christmas Card
Some brilliantly weird cards, popular in Alpine regions, were based on the naughty or nice Christmas theme.
St Nicholas was said to recruit the devil to help to determine whether children had been good or bad. Whereas Santa would reward children who had been good, this half-man, half-goat supernatural figure, called Krampus, would punish children who had been naughty. Many Christmas cards stating “Gruss vom Krampus” show him spying through windows or chasing children with sticks, leading them away in chains or stuffing them into his bag & carrying them off on his sled. Terrifying!
PLEASE NOTE: images on these Victorian Cards are quite grainy due to their age (doctoring the images would have removed some of their weird charm!)
